As recently as the 1980s this was a working Tin mine. As the mining process was intensive in its use of water with powerful jets of water seperating the tiny grains of tin oxide from the rest of the gravel. When the mine closed the water races remained and flooded the pit.

While the water looks beautiful, it is acidic and high in aluminium that leached from the decomposing granite and causes its amazing colour. And certainly not suitable for drinking or swimming. Not to mention that the deep sides would make it dangerous to get out.

This is my contribution to the monthly Daily Photo Blog. I had it all planned for weeks and went out to take the photo sunday, only to discover that what i was thinking as a topic wasn’t actually what i thought it was. So i fell back on my own version of a sphere, an Aussie Rules Football going through the goal at North Hobart Football Ground.

When i took this shot it was very dry in Richmond, East of Hobart and irrigation was necessary for anything much to grow. We have had some rain recently so hopefully things have eased a little.

At various points in the history of Hobart there were fears of invasion. At one time it was the French and another the Russians. I am not sure how realistic the fears were but it lead to the building of a network of gun batteries to defend the city including Bellerive shown in the picture.. None ever fired a shot in anger.

Several weeks ago i read an article in the Sunday Tasmanian about the former suburb of Melton. It was located out the back of Glenorchy and home for up to 500 people in its heyday but was cleared out and demolished in the 1960s with the development of a water catchment. All that remains is some old stairs (above), foundations and the remains of a cobbled road (tomorrow’s update)
